recap: They had 5 business days to do 4 things on my cruiser. They ended up only doing 2 and one of those had problems. I picked it up last Wednesday because I needed it that night and dropped it off again Thursday morning with the promise that it would be done that day. I called thursday afternoon to check on its status and was told that it was done, so I had my wife drive me and the kids in to pick it up. It wasn’t even close to being done. I went to check in with the tech who explained that he was going to have it done first thing Friday morning. Friday morning comes and they tell me it will be done by 4 pm. “U h. No. I needed it this morning, actually I needed it Wednesday morning but I’ m leaving out of town at 3 today.” “Okay well I’ll go tell the tech to get working on it.” HE ISN’T ALREADY?! I get a call that its done around 1 pm and so I hitch a ride with my wife who’s doing the drop off/pickup the kids dance. They say the other 2 things are done and its ready to go, I ask about the problem with the power steering pump and they tell me the tech is on lunch and to wait 5 minutes. 30 minutes later we chat and he says “yeah it’s probably a bad power steering pump” I explained to him that I think he’s right and ask him what they are going to do about it since it only started making noise after I dropped it off to them and that it’s only a 3 year old pump. He’s convinced its nothing they did. 30 minutes of back and forth later (it’s now 2 and im supposed to leave at 3 and I haven’t even packed the trailer) he takes it back into the bay and...sure enough...they suck a big ol frothy head out of the system. “you were right, the tech must have done the flush wrong because it was full of air.”
Yeah.
They discount me about $230 but it feels a little hollow, it’s still a crazy expensive service. And I STILL have a little noise after its been sitting. I think they ruined a seal and its asperating now. So I’ll be keeping a sharp eye on that.
Im betting there is a free power steering pump replacement service in my near future. Why is it so hard to get good work done?!

I picked up Genie last week , after leaving it with Kia for a week. Had been expecting it on Monday, and I tried to call my guy to find out what was going on. Did they get the pretensioner to install?
T urns out my service buy had gone on vacation and my car sat in their garage with nothing done on it. Techs forgot. They were apologetic and my guy got on it and had it done in a day. You know what, it was a little exasperating, but they were contrite, they did the job ASAP when the rep found out they’d dropped the ball, and most importantly they had given me a loaner so that my life wasn’t too put out. Under those conditions, I’m willing to say “shit happens”.
But when the customer needs the repair to be done fully and when promised, and his mobility is counting on it, the service department can’t rely on “shit happens”. This is where the “service” in the name comes in. At this point, I feel your dealer should be giving you a loaner for the Moab trip and going over it with a fine toothed comb to make sure everything you discussed is in tip top shape when you return.
It’s not just about the repairs, it’s also about the attitude toward the customer.

Where is the closest Cruiser shop?
We went through this when we drove a Westy. VW dealerships were less than helpful - especially when the techs were usually younger than the van. The only exception was when the dealership owner who was an original aircooled guy and would work evenings on the ‘old stuff’.
Otherwise we would end up trailering the van to the nearest specialist 2hrs away.

I thought power steering was self bleeding?

I suggest writing a letter to the owner of the dealership giving him the details of your experience... and end it with the question “Why would I ever come there for service again?”

Kurt is literally down the street, but he only does upgrades not repairs. I have a cruiser specialist shop I normally goto but his rates are on par with the dealership and his work isn’t anything special I feel. They’ve gotten a lot more popular and so they’ve hired a lot more fresh faced techs that aren’t any better than the dealer ones. Its not mechanic I have a problem with he worked hard to make my wiring really good, but the lube tech, the service writers, the receptionist. All garbage.

Agreed. Service was the last thing I paid for apparently .

This is what makes me wonder if they’ve damaged a seal during the service and as it sits new air makes its way in. The noise goes away a few minutes after driving which indicates that the system has re-bled itself but comes back after a long sit.

The chair of my companies board (volunteer, not for profit) is the head of this dealer group and her son is the Land Cruiser heritage museum owner, I plan to mention their sudden and clear decline in customer service to each when I see them next.

At least it was expensive; there’s always that.
